La región Autónoma del Atlántico Norte en el Caribe Nicaragüense es remota, habitada principalmente por afro descendientes, con una tasa anual de crecimiento de la población del 4%, la más alta en el país. Sin embargo, por lo menos la mitad de los 6 millones de personas que habitan esta región no tienen acceso a servicios sanitarios ni agua potable, y viven en pobreza.<br />
Desde 2011, hombres y mujeres, con el apoyo de organizaciones internacionales, han trabajado en la implementación de proyectos de saneamiento y de acceso al agua potable que les permite mejorar las condiciones de salud y, por lo tanto, la calidad de vida de sus familias.
